One doesn’t need any particularly complicated powers of reduction to work out that males and females have been getting together, to effect reproduction and to care for their offspring, across the millenia of human history. The arrangement between the participating man and woman will always have been special, but its identification as a longterm arrangement, union commencing with a particular ceremony, the wedding option, is only a relatively recent event.

The old adage that “today’s luxuries are tomorrow’s necessities” applies to weddings just as it is applicable to automatic washers and air conditioning. Formalisation of marriage, underpinned with rights and needs, and marked by the general public rite of the wedding, was at first restricted to rich land-owners – that is, the people with serious assets requiring focused concentration to their inter-generational transfer. For poorer folks the wedding option could get going when circumstances so required without the lavish luxury of a wedding.

As weddings became the standard, the rituals surrounding them have become more complex, and subject also to the vagaries of fashion. There were periods when it isn’t been acceptable to have a marital relationship without first having a wedding – that is, “getting married”. This view of marriage, giving it ‘sanctity ‘, in turn gave larger importance to the wedding ceremony. And as this occurred, the wedding got to be a bigger deal with more of everything – more rite, more folk, grander receptions and banquets, costlier gifts, more bridal wear and other formal wear dressing up, and inevitably more cost.

Nowadays , the wedding option is often a huge sight needing careful online research and selection, requiring all sorts of experts, for the 2 major elements: the formal ceremony, maybe at a church, but any pricey location will do; and the reception, which again can be anywhere suitably dimensioned, with the price suitably adjusted so it isn't seen as inexpensive. Caterers specialize in wedding banquets; the wedding cake is important enough to need another specialization. Wedding floral displays have particular significance; table floral arrangements, wedding bouquets, floral buttonholes for the men. Wedding limousines (since cars and trucks aren't up to the job); wedding photographers and videographers to assemble the wedding album; and special, harmonized dress-up agreements for not just the bride and groom, but a large listing of others with some role to perform on the day.

It’s now got to the point where the wedding is so big – it regularly overwhelms the ‘marriage ‘ itself, which today likely started silently a little time before the wedding – that another rite has now developed to mark the countdown to the wedding. This is the engagement party and may be the only marriage option some now take.
